Privacy Policy
1. Who we are
Mini Magic Press ("we", "us", "our") provides an app that generates personalised children's picture books using artificial intelligence, alongside a small free library of pre-made books. We are based in New Zealand and handle personal information in accordance with the Privacy Act 2020. This policy explains what personal information we collect, why we collect it, who we share it with, and the choices and rights you have. It applies to the Mini Magic Press website and app at minimagicpress.com. If you have any questions, contact us at [email protected].
2. Information we collect
We only collect what we need to run the service. Depending on how you use it, this includes:
- Account details: your email address and authentication data managed by our login provider (Supabase), including login timestamps and technical metadata used to keep your account secure. We never see or store your password.
- Reader profiles: the first name or nickname you give a reader, the avatar and appearance choices you make, and any short description you enter, so your books can star that character.
- Content you create: the themes, prompts and phonics options you submit, and the stories and images generated for you, which we keep in your library.
- Reading activity: which books are completed and simple counts used for reading rewards (stars and badges).
- Purchases: a record of your credit purchases and current credit balance. Card payments are handled by Stripe; we receive confirmation and limited billing details but not your full card number.
- Technical information: essential cookies that keep you logged in, and server logs (such as IP address, timestamps and error details) used for security, debugging and preventing abuse. We use your approximate country, derived from your IP address, only to show prices in a local currency.
3. How we use your information
We use personal information to:
- create your account and let you sign in;
- generate the books you request and store them in your library;
- check submitted text, generated stories and generated images with automated moderation to keep content age-appropriate;
- take payment, manage credits, and refund credits for failed generations;
- provide support, keep the service reliable and secure, and detect or prevent misuse; and
- meet our legal obligations. We do not use your prompts or books to advertise to you, and we do not sell your personal information.
4. AI processing of your prompts
To generate a book, the text you submit (your theme or prompt and the reader's name and description) is sent to our AI providers for processing: Groq generates and helps moderate the story text, and fal.ai generates the pictures from image descriptions. When the read-aloud voice is used, the book's text (which may include the reader's first name) is sent to Microsoft Azure AI Speech to create the voice audio; Microsoft processes it transiently to provide the service and does not retain it or use it to train its models. Because this text is sent to third-party AI services, please do not enter real identifying information about a child — such as full real names, schools, addresses, or photos. Use a first name or nickname only.
5. Reading practice and your child's voice
If you choose to use the optional reading-practice feature, we ask for microphone permission and capture audio while your child reads a page aloud. That audio is sent securely to our speech-assessment provider (Microsoft Azure AI Speech) to score how the passage was read, and the scores come straight back to you. We do not store the recording: it is processed transiently and discarded after scoring, and we do not currently store the scores either. Microsoft processes the audio only to provide the service and does not use it to train its models. The feature is entirely optional — the app works fully without it — and a grown-up is asked to acknowledge the microphone use before the first recording.
6. Who we share information with
We share personal information only with the service providers that help us run Mini Magic Press. They process it on our behalf under their own security and privacy obligations:
- Supabase — authentication, database, and file storage for your account, profiles, books and images;
- Cloudflare — website and app hosting, content delivery, and security;
- Stripe — payment processing;
- Groq — AI generation and moderation of story text;
- fal.ai — AI generation of images; and
- Microsoft Azure AI Speech — speech services: creating the read-aloud voice audio and scoring optional reading-practice recordings.
7. Legal disclosure and no sale of data
We may disclose information if required by law, or where reasonably necessary to protect the safety, rights, or property of children, our users, or Mini Magic Press. We do not sell personal information and we do not share it for third-party advertising.
8. Storage and overseas transfer
Some of our providers store or process information on servers outside New Zealand (for example, in the United States). Where information is transferred overseas, we rely on reputable providers that are required to protect it to standards comparable with the Privacy Act 2020. By using the service, you acknowledge this offshore storage and processing.
9. How long we keep it
We keep your account information and library for as long as your account is open. To make read-aloud instant, we keep the generated voice audio for book text: audio for single words is generic and shared, while audio for your personalised books' pages is stored against your account and deleted when your account is closed. We keep purchase records for as long as needed for tax and accounting, and security logs for a limited period. If you delete a book, it is removed from your library. If you close your account or ask us to delete your data, we will delete or de-identify your personal information, except where we are required to keep some of it by law.
10. Security
We take reasonable steps to protect personal information: data is encrypted in transit, access is restricted, and we rely on established providers (Supabase, Cloudflare, Stripe) for hosting and payments. No online service can be completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security, but we work to protect your information and will respond promptly to any issue we become aware of.
11. Children’s privacy
Mini Magic Press is intended for adults aged 18 or over, who create books for the children in their care. It is not directed to children, and children should only use it under adult supervision. Please do not create profiles or prompts that contain identifying personal information about a real child. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact us and we will remove it.
12. Your rights
Under the Privacy Act 2020 you can ask for a copy of the personal information we hold about you, and ask us to correct it if it is wrong. You can update your reader profiles and delete your books at any time in the app. To request access, correction or deletion, or to close your account, email us at [email protected] and we will respond within a reasonable time (usually within 20 working days). If you are not satisfied with how we handle your information or a request, you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner at privacy.org.nz.
13. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. We will change the version and "last updated" date shown at the top of this page, and where changes are material we will take reasonable steps to let you know. Continuing to use the service after an update means you accept the revised policy.
